How the SAT is scored

Your total SAT score is the sum of two section scores: Reading and Writing, and Math. Each section is scored from 200 to 800 in steps of 10, so the total runs from 400 to 1600.

Total SAT score = Reading and Writing score + Math score

The digital SAT is adaptive. Each section has two modules, and your work on the first module sets the difficulty of the second. Your score depends on which questions you answer correctly, not only on how many. That is why College Board does not publish a table that turns correct answers into a score. For an official-style score, take a full practice test in the Bluebook app.

Your score shows colleges you are ready for hard coursework. An original research project shows them what you do with that readiness. You work one-on-one with a PhD mentor from a top-20 university, on a question you choose. See how the program works.

SAT percentiles: what your score means

Your percentile is the share of test takers who scored the same as you or lower. The percentiles below are College Board's user group percentiles, based on students from the last three graduating classes who took the SAT.

What is a good SAT score?

A good SAT score is one that puts you in or above the middle of the range at the colleges you want. Some useful markers:

  • 1029: the average total score for the class of 2025, across about 2 million test takers, according to College Board.
  • 1200: higher than or equal to 75% of recent test takers.
  • 1400: the 93rd percentile, competitive at many selective colleges.
  • 1500 and up: the 97th percentile and above, typical of admitted students at the most selective colleges.

Each college publishes the score range of its admitted students. See the data for Harvard, MIT, Penn and Duke. Your score is one part of your application, next to your grades and the courses behind them. Check yours with the high school GPA calculator.

What is an SAT superscore?

Your superscore combines your best Reading and Writing score and your best Math score from different test dates.

Example: on your first test you score 650 in Reading and Writing and 700 in Math. On your second test you score 700 and 680. Your best single test is 1380, and your superscore is 700 + 700 = 1400.

Many colleges superscore the SAT, but not all. Check each college's testing policy before you decide which scores to send.

SAT to ACT conversion
